Clean, thoughtfully engineered lines provide a striking framework for the technology inside this jacket: a sleek interior with a bonded liner, fully taped seams, and Omni-Dry —an extremely air-permeable waterproof fabric that diffuses the moisture vapors you generate while still shedding water in the worst of conditions. For times when your heart rate is really in the red, zip open the aptly placed underarm vents and let the fresh air flow in. Articulated elbows provide a natural fit and superior mobility. Hand pockets and a security pocket at left shoulder all but disappear thanks to our Invizzip™ technology. The Peak 2 Peak Jacket was honored by Outside Magazine with a 2011 Gear of the Year award. Lightweight and proficient in any high-alpine situation, the Peak 2 Peak Jacket sports an innovative three-layer fabric that's completely waterproof, windproof, and ultrabreathable. Hand pockets and a security pocket at left shoulder are all but invisible thanks to our Invizzip technology. Columbia's most breathable waterproof technology, Omni-Dry is designed to keep you dry during highly aerobic activity, whatever the weather. This extremely air permeable waterproof fabric transfers the moisture vapors you generate out of the garment at an extremely high rate, while still shedding the elements in the worst conditions. Omni-Dry is the ultimate in waterproof technology for the outdoors. During physical activity, increased body temperature can cause perspiration. In garments with low breathability, this results in condensation causing the wearer to feel damp, clammy or even wet. This is often mistaken for leaky or faulty construction, and is always uncomfortable. With Omni-Dry, air is able to circulate through the fabric, helping to regulate the conditions in the garment and keep excess moisture from collecting inside, while still maintaining its wind blocking properties. This is achievable because the Omni-Dry membrane is highly air permeable and extremely thin and lightweight. Omni-Dry technology ensures waterproof breathable protection from the elements. For a waterproof jacket that retails for about $400 one might imagine it, without a doubt, would at least live up the basic goal of being waterproof. Not so for my peak2peak. The arms and front chest area soaks through often within ten minutes in moderate rain. I bought it to be my rain kit for cycling and everyday life. For the cycling and other activities the breathability is what brought me to this particular product. After seeing several positive gear blog reviews of it I decided to pull the trigger on my first heinously expensive multi-season technical jacket. It does do a pretty acceptable job of being breathable with the pit zips open and I've also run with it without too much internal steaming, at least, nothing compared to my other Pearl Izumi jackets. The form factor is great, but ultimately it has been pathetically non-waterproof and I don't see how I can feasibly return it since I moved to another country. The build quality has also been pretty bad, the internal laminate strips all started peeling off within 6 months of use. Moreover, not that I care as much, but the material collects a lot of dirt on all the edges of zippers, cuffs, etc and has been seemingly impossible to clean off. I tried to restore the waterproofness by using waterproof/breathable membrane re-sealing wash but the effect was minimal. Almost nine months on my jacket will show noticeable penetration within a couple minutes and the fabric will become soaked. I will absolutely feel the water within 15 almost everywhere on it. I also killed an ipod earlier on that was in one of the sealed pockets. I got it half off on amazon during a sale, but for $400 this jacket is a non-starter, and half of that is still a huge disappointment because it doesn't even accomplish it's most fundamental function.
