Chilly Dog Sweaters Selecting the Right Pet Apparel Choosing the right sweater for your dog is crucial to ensure they stay warm and comfortable. Consider the following factors: Size and Fit Measure your dog’s neck, chest, and length to find the right fit. A well-fitting sweater or coat should cover their entire back without being too tight or restrictive. Material Look for sweaters and coats made from high-quality, breathable materials like wool or fleece. These materials provide warmth without causing overheating or irritation. Style Pet apparel come in various styles, from functional to fashionable. Choose a design that suits your dog’s needs and your personal preferences. Ease of Use If your dog is not accustomed to wearing clothing, opt for sweaters that are easy to put on and take off. Dogs, like humans, have varying levels of cold tolerance. Their ability to withstand cold temperatures depends on several factors, including their size, coat type, and overall health. Small Breeds Smaller dog breeds, such as Chihuahuas and Yorkshire Terriers, tend to have less body mass and a lower fat-to-muscle ratio, making them more susceptible to the cold. These dogs often benefit from wearing sweaters to help maintain their body temperature. Short-Haired Breeds Breeds with short coats, like the Greyhound and the Dalmatian, have less insulation against the cold. A sweater can provide much-needed warmth and comfort for these dogs in chilly weather. Toy Breeds Dogs in the toy group, such as the Pomeranian and the Shih Tzu, often lack the body mass to stay warm in cold weather. Sweaters are a practical solution to protect them from the chill. Senior Dogs Aging dogs may have a decreased ability to regulate their body temperature, and arthritis can make them more sensitive to the cold. Sweaters can be essential in keeping senior pets comfortable during winter. Our Story In the vibrant heart of downtown Philadelphia, a simple yet powerful idea took root—an idea that would bring warmth not only to dogs but to the people who love them. Founded in 1999, Chilly Dog emerged from a passion for pets and a desire to fill a gap in the market. Our mission was clear: to create high-quality, affordable dog sweaters that would make a difference in the lives of pets and their owners. Our journey led us to the skilled Quechuan Artisans in South America, where we found not just craftsmanship but a shared dedication to quality and ethical production. Together, we embarked on a mission to hand-knit wool dog sweaters that would fit every dog perfectly, while also supporting fair trade practices and sustainability. Since our inception, Chilly Dog has remained steadfast in our commitment to fair trade principles. Our sweaters are crafted from 100% wool, colored with natural plant dyes, and made with care by artisans who take pride in their work. This commitment not only ensures exceptional quality but also empowers artisans in remote villages to support their families and communities through fair wages and safe working conditions. Each sweater is a testament to the warmth and compassion that begins with the artisans’ skilled hands. At Chilly Dog, we recognize that every dog is as unique as their owner. Update (2023): This is the second sweater I have purchased in this design, and my 14th sweater from this brand (six different dogs). My original review (below) is from over 10 years ago. I just ordered this sweater again, this time for a male French bulldog that weighs 32 pounds, has a 17" neck and measures 24" around the widest part of the chest. I chose a size L and it is a bit long for him (withers to tail is 14") but is otherwise a perfect fit. I just washed it in warm water (hand-wash, line dry) and folded up the extra length and put in a few stitches to hold it in place, and it is now perfect. Same excellent quality of materials and workmanship that I expected from this brand and definitely worth the price.Original review (2012) Our rat terrier is just over 16 pounds and 14" from base of neck to base of tail, but he is pretty stocky and very muscular, with a broad chest, so I ordered a size Medium--and it fits just him perfectly. He is always cold during the winter months, shivering even when he is in the house, and just miserable outside (but he doesn't want to stay cooped up inside all of the time) so I wanted to find something warm as well as durable enough to last through the season. I read lots of reviews for various sweaters and coats before I happened to find this one, and as soon as I saw it, I could just picture him in it...there were only a few reviews for this brand, but from the positive comments and the product description, I figured this was the best option. I'm very happy I purchased this--it is well-made, VERY heavy and warm, and my kids are happy that he doesn't look like a sissy wearing it! At first he wasn't too enthusiastic about it, but within a day or two he got used to it, and now happily wears it every night and whenever he goes outside. I like it so much I just ordered another one in a different pattern so he has something to wear when this one is being washed (I wash it by hand & line dry--takes quite a while to dry--it holds its shape and there is no shrinking). This sweater is great for short-haired dogs or those with a thin coat, but might be too much of a good thing for dogs with thick coats unless it is extremely cold.
